Evidence of Work

In this photo it shows our lap charts and who we decided would do each blog post.

This photo shows me and faith working on different parts of our lapcharts ready to upload them on our blog.

This is a photo of me editing the film opening to make it as good as possible

Representation

Insitution

The companies that would produce these films are Lions gate and Paramount this is because they are big production companies so the film will be well known and a lot of people will want to see the film. They also release a range of different film genres so they would happily produce this film. Here I have explained why we picked Paramount and Lionsgate as our film production companies. In this video the reasons have been explained.

Shooting Schedule

Our shooting schedule for our film opening was pretty simple because we filmed everything on the same day. This was Thursday the 1st of December. However once we had put it all on premiere we had to go out on the school field and take a few more shots and film so diegetic sound to make it sound more realistic.

Once we completed our first draft we went back to Springfield to re film some bits to make them better. We filmed these on the 13/12/16. So we had time to re edit our film opening.

Props Research

We did some research of props we would need in a mystery murder film opening and there wasn't many. So we came up with our own props that we knew we were going to need. These were:
  • Blood
  • School uniform
  • Dog
These were the three main props we used in out film opening, this made it look more realistic because the dogs helped find the body, the school uniform made it look like she was walking home from school and the blood made the death look real.

Location shots

These are all the different shots and an explanation about them.

Moodboard of Films

This is a mood board of our film inspirations. Looking from the film posters you can see they all are mysterious and have the same genre of mystery/crime. These films also gave us an idea to what our film opening should look like. These films all have murders or some type of criminal case, which links to our film idea, of a girl being murdered and then no one knowing who has done it.

Peer Assessment

Group Sequence: Panophobia

What elements of this sequence did you feel were successful? give at least 2 elements, and explain why they were successful.

The most successful parts of his film opening was the titles as they looked really effective and made the opening a bit more exciting and tense as you wanted to know who was burning the photos and why. Another successful thing was how they did a flash back to one of the memories they all shared.

Were there any aspects of the sequence which you felt were confusing/distracting/missing, etc? Be sure to explain your answers.

There wasn't really any confusing or missing shots to the film opening. The only thing was that the song could gradually fade out so there isn't just a dramatic silence while the two girls are making the 'com home Erin' video.

List 2 things which you feel would have improved this sequence and explain your opinion.

An improvement could be getting the diegetic sound to make it more realistic. Another improvement could b to make the pictures clearer before burning them as we couldn't actually see what the pictures were of.

First Draft Film Opening Feedback

First Draft:

The feedback we got from our first draft of our film opening was better than expected. Most of the feedback was about the voice over and how it wasn't very clear and that there was a lot of stutters. People also said that it was very fast so we have now improved this by re filming it with a different person to get a clear voice over. Before we let everyone see the film opening we knew that the voice over wasn't great but we didn't have time to re film so we were glad this was our feedback and we agreed with it completely. Some people also said that some of the shots of the setting was unclear and a bit blurry, we also noticed this and will take it into account for our second draft. We also got feedback about the titles because we hadn't finished them and because they were a bit big so we needed to make them smaller. However we did get a lot of good feedback which really helped us focus on what we could improve. Most people said that the genre was clear and that the speed of the shots were good as it created more tension. The setting was a good place to film because it was a normal day in normal time and was very realistic. Many people liked the use of dogs because it was different and they made the opening a lot better.

Production Diary

07/11/16- Monday
On this day we were put into our groups, in my group was Leah and Beth. We had to write down a few film opening ideas to do with the story line and genre. Here are our ideas that we presented as a mind map:
Faiths ideas:
1)cliff hanger/twist at the end
2)internet-cyber bullying/online stalker
3)missing peoples case
Leahs idea:
My idea:

All these are similar ideas to do with mystery, like the internet idea leaves you thinking who is behind the computer screen, and a missing persons case it is like where is the person? Was this person taken?

08/11/16-Tuesday
On this day we had to come up with our ideas and make something good to present them on to for the rest of our groups.

09/11/16-Wednesday
On this day we presented our film ideas to each other and picked the best film opening idea that we agreed on. We picked Leahs idea because it was very successful in the plot, and we also thought it would be easier to film. We had also started planning and adding things on to the story plot.

10/11/16-Thursday
On this day we started doing our film presentation on PowerPoint, for our film opening story, saying what our idea is, our marketing, etc. ready to present to our class.

11/11/16- Friday
This day we had to present out group PowerPoint to the class the class gave us some ideas that we could develop or ask. These are some feedback we got:
  • a lot of enigma code through out(makes the reader want to watch more)
  • very clear genre/themes
  • might be to hard to imitate a funeral
  • the ex boyfriend is the most interesting character because people want to know how the is involved.
14/11/16-Monday

On Monday we were planning/adapting our ideas based on the whole class feedbacks. We decided to change the bit of the funeral, because everyone thought it was to hard to do. We changed this ideas with the CCTV footage of some of the girls last moments before her death so the audience can build up the story in there head.

15/11/16-Tuesday

On this day we started drawing our storyboards, and planning the shots. We noted the timings, the props.

17/11/16 and 18/11/16- Thursday/Friday
On both these days we started to blog about our film openings and our ideas.

21/11/16- Monday
Monday, we started writing up our tasks that we assigned each other. We shared our tasks out so that our time would be managed correctly. Like we started blogging about location, shots, script, audience.

22/11/16-Tuesday
On this day we started to write a script for our story board and we planned it, to upload as a video. Also we done research on music that we could play in the film opening to create affects.

23/11/16- Wednesday
On this day we updated our production diary and started to carry on our blogs about shots/location/editing/sound.

24/11/16- Thursday

25/11/16- Friday

On this day we filmed our story board, and we recorded the voice over telling the main ideas behind the story boards.

29/11/16- Monday

we uploaded our story board and voice over on to adobe premier and edited the footage so we could upload it on to our blogs.

1/12/16- Thursday

On this day we filmed our film opening in Springfield park, all day. Getting all the shots and things together.

2/12/16- Friday

On this day we updated our blogs and started editing the shots.

5/11/16- Monday

We edited our film opening and made improvements just before our deadline

6/12/16- Tuesday

On this day we watched all the other film openings and peer assessed them and we got our feedback back most of it was good but the voice over was a bit dodgy. so we decide to re do it.

7/12/16- Wednesday

On this day we re filmed the voice over and added it to our second draft and added all the titles and made sure all the diegetic sounds were in the right place.

8/12/16 & 9/12/16 - Thursday & Friday

On these days Faith, Leah and I started to finish all the work on our blogs and make sure everything was there.

    Risk Assessment

    Script

We only have talking in the news report and this is our script for it:

At around 7:45am this morning the police were alerted to an incident at Coronation park. A young girl who has just been identified as Lillie Mason, a student from Great Baddow High School, was found dead by local dog walker Joanne Roberts. She claims that the dog went over to a pile of leaves, it was only then when she went to go and retrieve her dog that she saw the young girl, she immediately phoned police.

When police arrived on the scene they were quick to tell that she was already dead, police say the girl suffered major stab wounds and that the injuries were the cause of her death. The police have already started the murder investigation  but have yet to have any main suspects.

The family is all fully aware of this tragic incident that happened this morning and would be grateful if anyone could come forward with information on who was with Lillie Mason on her walk to school. Its not clear to as whether this was a random attack or if 17 year old Lillie Mason was a target. The family have asked for people to respect their privacy at this time so that they can start to come to terms with the loss of their daughter.

    Audience

Our target audience is 15-30 years olds. This is because we find that the disturbing scenes are not suitable for under 15 year olds. We also didn't aim for the target audience to be above 30 year olds because we found that older people would find it less interesting and they have less time as they might work and have a family.
Our primary audience is teenagers because they help decision make. Whereas are secondary audience is early adults because they are the second most important consumer segment we'd like to target
    .

    Storyboard and evaluation

    Storyboard:

    Evaluation:
This is our storyboard as a video, we voiced over so that more details could be heard and explained. All though there is not a lot of detail in the drawings, being able to see a drawn plan as well as written helps. The descriptions in the storyboard is very brief but has been expanded a little because of the voiceover. We could have improved it by adding more detail into the explanation of each drawing.

    Marketing campaign

Our film needs to be marketed so that people can want to go and watch it. Our main marketing idea is to distribute poster every where ,giving a brief overview about what our film is about. We want to make the audience want to see more so a lot of enigma codes will be used in our poster as well. Another idea of marketing, is social media. Social media plays a huge role in day to day life, so if shown on there, a lot of people will get to see it, because there's no restrictions like a poster has. Also a website of our own to show, will advertise the film opening well. We have also made a web page that explains everything about the film and the different ways we are marketing the film and how to contact us about the film. We are hoping that using all these different ways of marketing our film will get good views.

    Timeline of opening

This is the timeline of our opening and how it will be set out with the timings and everything. However, things may change slightly because of how the different scenes are shot.

    Fonts for titles

Here are different fonts for the titles of our film opening. We chose 10 different fonts so we had a wide range of ideas to choose from for our final opening.  They all give a creepy, mystery look which gives the audience some idea of what the film will be like. If we picked a nice fantasy font it would make the audience confused as it wouldn't go along with the theme of the film opening.

Research codes/conventions of genre and audience

We researched different codes/conventions of genre and audience to come up with our film opening. Here are some of the ideas we got:

    Storyline:
    • Unsolved crime
    • Centred around detective/Normal civilian
    • Detective/ Normal civilian pieces things together
    Setting
    • A big open area where the murder will happen
    • Office/room- detective/normal civilian puts pieces together
    Themes:
    • Mystery- lots of enigma codes to make you think who could have murdered the young girl
    • Crime- young girl being murdered in a park
    Characters:
    • Detective/Normal civilian
    • Criminal
    Props:
    • murder weapon
    Editing:
    • Fades to black- creates suspense
    Sound:
    • Mellow, eerie orchestral music- adds tension
    • Slow and creepy soundtracks

All of the codes and conventions relate to our film opening because in a murder mystery film there is a lot of tension and suspense.

    Film opening and evaluation

    Evaluation:
The feedback we got for our film opening presentation was mixed. Most people said that it was difficult to understand and that there wasn't a message behind it. Most people said that our film genre was a horror/ dark genre but it is more like a crime than a horror as it isn't scary at all, this is good genre because we have merged two together to create a widespread genre to get as many people as possible to watch the film. Some people also said that it's very intriguing because of all the enigma codes and because it is a close relative that has killed her. The target audience was the right age gap because they are quite young and they enjoy crime/mystery genre films. Most people think that the funeral will be hard to film so maybe we will re-think the funeral and just have the family members going to her grave one at a time as this would look more realistic. The production companies we have chosen are very well known so this will hopefully help us get more views with the film.

    The Art Of The Titles

We had to choose one title sequences from films in www.artofthetitle.com and screengrab each title in order, write down the jobs titles and seconds from the start and the length of each title. Then we had to write a summary discussing the various titles, fonts, colours, sound, effects and any meaning that may link them to the genre or narrative.

The font used in this film opening is a very uncommon one. This kind of font would be used for a thriller/horror film. The colour of the font is red this shows that the film could be horror based as red is associated with blood and danger and these words are usually associated with horror films. However it could be more of an action film because the sound of the opening sequence is quite fast this could tell us that the film itself is going to be full of action and adventure.

Student Film Openings and Construction Mark Scheme

In class we watched a few different film opening and marked them against the mark scheme. Then we went and found a few of our own to mark.

    Mark Scheme
Level 1 0–23 marks The work for the main task is possibly incomplete. There is minimal evidence in the work of the creative use of any relevant technical skills such as:

    Editing Practise- Dancing Animals

This is my practise editing task.

    Institution

In class we learnt about Mainstream vs Independent film.

    Independent:
    ~ Makes you think
    ~ Makes you ask questions
    ~ Associated with critical success

    Mainstream:
    ~ Makes you laugh
    ~ Makes you cry
    ~ Associated with commercial success

    Audiences and Access
~ Mass audiences consume primarily 'mainstream' film because there isn't a lot of independent films around.
~ Entertaining, mainstream films make money

    Film pitch and evaluation

    Film Pitch:

    Evaluation:
For our Film presentation we got a lot of feedback to consider to make our next presentation better. Most people said that our title of our film was short, simple and snappy, this is good for a film because when you talk about it you don't want it to be long and having to keep saying the long title because it will just waste time. Everyone said our characters were interesting and they all had different personalities so they all work great as a team. However the budget was quite small considering we had quite big stars in the film. Many people said it keeps the audience asking questions and they are thinking throughout and have relevant influence. Most people said that our narrative was suitable for our target audience and would attract customers this was because it was well thought out. Although some people thought it was hard to follow as there was a lot of writing and it could have had more of a business side to it as it was for middle aged professionals. We asked the class whether they thought the film was different from other thriller films they came back with mixed thoughts. Some people said yes because it was an interesting storyline and others said no because there was nothing new added to separate it from other thriller films. Most of our class said we had good ideas for marketing like posters, trailer and TV ads but others said there wasn't any good marketing ideas. Everyone in our class said that they would buy our film which we were very happy about.
To improve next time we wont use as much detail because we found out that people switch off and  we want them to buy our film. We also need to talk about the money and cost of the film in more detail t make sure people know how much it will cost to make and produce.

    Film Language

For this task we had to analyse each film opening using different techniques we have learnt.

For Boys N The Hood we had to use FAM, CLAMPS, MCDOVED & STOPS.

In this film opening there are a lot of different camera shots. One camera shot is where the camera zooms in on the red stop sign this could be trying to tell us that the place is dangerous or is trying to warn us that something bad will happen. There are panning shots throughout the opening scene this creates tension at some parts because you want to see what's ahead but you have to wait for the camera to move. The close ups on the children's drawing is important because it shows that all the children think of guns and shootings. Most angles are level in the opening scene this could be telling us that things are normal but could go up or down anytime during the day/night. There are non-diegetic sounds being used when the children look at the posters on the wall, these non-diegetic sounds are gun shots but only we can hear them. Most of the dialogue is spoken confidently and everyone speaks with an American accent because it is set in America. There is a few voice overs in this opening scene one of them is at the beginning where you can hear screaming, shouting and gun shots being fired but you cant see anything happening. The emotion changes throughout the opening sequence. It starts off sad because of the shootings last night then it goes into happy because they have a joke in class then it turns all aggressive and stays aggressive till the end of the 6 minutes. The transitions between each shot are slow which causes more suspense during the film opening. The pace is slow throughout the film opening this could suggest that no one is doing anything about the shootings so the city is at a slow pace while people are trying to get through a long, hard day. There are two main people who get the most screen time. There main screen time is where they have a fight in the class room. This is an important scene because it tells us that all the fighting going on in the streets is affecting the children so they think its ok to fight. The lighting is quite low key during the first part of the opening scene this could be because it is telling u bad things have just happened and people are still trying to get over it. The costumes are very 1990s this is because it was set in 1991 in America. The teacher uses a stick to point at things on the board and she probably hits peoples desks as well if they aren't listening. The children in the classroom are very good actors this is because they act bored and tired at the start of this scene this is because the teacher is talking in a very monotone voice which doesn't help the children learn. It is set in America in the 1990s, the place they live is a very rough area. the weather is cloudy there is no sun or no rain and the time of day is morning through till the afternoon as it shows the little boy going to and from school.

For The Matrix we had to use Colour, binary oppositions, male/female - good vs evil

In this film opening the use of colour is dark which shows that something is going to happen then a few seconds in a girl is dressed in black this could suggest that she is a bad person or could show that she is in danger. Dark colours also always makes things more tense so this could also be another reason why they are used. This film opening also show the difference between men and women. The men think they can handle the woman in the room but she proves them wrong and knocks them all out. The woman escapes from the men which shows that not all men are better than women. The good vs evil is quite hard to understand, in my opinion I think the woman is the bad person but I'm not sure but I cant think  of any other reason why the police would be chasing her so she must be the bad person. This is different from other films as most bad people are men. At the end of this scene you don't know whether she dies or not which is very annoying as she has escaped the men but may have been killed by the van. The binary opposites in this film opening are that the woman is being chased by men and that the woman is able to knock some of the officers out to escape the room.

For Up we had to consider how to show the passage of time, sound, Mise En scene and camera

In UP it shows the passage of time by using the ties. This makes time go fast because he has a different tie everyday so it speeds time up. The music is happy throughout the opening scene until it gets to the part where Ellie is told she cant have children at this point the music goes deep and slow to fit the video playing. The whole background music is non-diegetic because the characters cant hear it but we can. There are two main types of emotions in this opening scene these are happy and sad most of the scenes are happy which goes with the happy tune of the music but there are a couple of sad parts where the music goes slower to fit the sad theme. The costumes change throughout because their ages change so their outfits fit their age. the lighting is bright most of the time but goes dark on the sad parts to make it more realistic. The main props are the balloon stand as it shows it more than once. Another main prop is the money bank where they are tying to save to go Paradise Falls. It is set in South America in a small cosy house, the weather, time and date changes as the scene is through a period of time. Most of the shots are level and long shots this is because there is a lot going on, although there are a few close up shots one of them is when Ellie is doing Carls ties and another is when they keep having to smash the pot with their money in it. There is a lot of panning shots throughout the scene going from one shot to another.

For Cape Fear we had to use camera and Mise En scene.

In Cape Fear the camera shots and angles are all pretty similar the shots a either close us or long shots and the angles are all level this could show that he has no emotion and that he is a very serious person.  There are panning shots throughout. The man walks out of gates as a long shot but walks towards the camera to make a close up. The costumes in this opening scene is either a police outfit or a prison mans outfit this is because they are is a prison. the lighting is light because he is getting out of prison so it shows there is light at the end of the tunnel. it is set in a prison so t has a very tense atmosphere this is even worse as you watch the n walk out of the prison as everyone else stares at him.

    Audience

    Who creates what we watch?
The media decides what we watch as they produce the media but the audience decides whether it is worth watching.

Can the media exist/function without the audience? Can the audience exist/function without the media?
The media cant exist because if there is no audience the media is pointless. If there is no media the audience have nothing to talk about.

Can the media control an audience?
No the media cant control an audience be the audience decides what they like and what they don't, but the media can control an audience because it puts things into the audiences head and makes them believe things.

Who is more powerful the media or the audience why? how?
The audience because we decide what we believe and enjoy. The media also brainwashes us to believe things.

    Uses and Gratifications

It is suggested that the uses and gratifications theory has to fulfil one of the following when we choose a form of media:
Identify- being able to recognise the product or person in front of you, role models that reflect similar values to yours, aspiration to be someone else.
Educate- being able to acquire information, knowledge and understanding
Entertain- what you are consuming should give you enjoyment and also some form of 'escapism' enabling us to forget our worries temporarily
Social Interaction- The ability for media products to produce a topic of conversation between other people, sparks debate.

Uses and gratification theory can be seen in cases such as personal music selection. We select music not only to fit a particular mood but also in attempts to show empowerment or other socially conscience motives. There are many different types of music and we choose from them to fulfil a particular need

    Film and You

What do we mean when we use the word 'film'?
When we use the word 'film' we are talking about the film industry as a whole. Films ate classed as moving pictures and can change over time. A film is created by photographing scenes and putting them all together to make one big film.

Do you think it means the same as the word 'movie'?
I think the word 'movie' means the same as the word 'film' because are a type of visual communication which use moving pictures and sound to tell stories or inform people.

And what about the word 'cinema'?
The word 'cinema', short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. It is also used to tell stories and inform people.

    Top 10 Favourite Films

Some of my top 10 films are Disney films they are all in common because they all come from the same film industry. The hunger games series, Harry Potter series and the divergent series are all in common because they are all action films and have a lot going on which is what I like in films because they keep me entertained. Also the divergent series and the fault in our stars are in common because the main characters in the Divergent series are the main characters in The Fault in Our Stars. Marley and Me and the fault in our stars are similar as they are both sad films that are likely to make people cry.

    Representation

    The Duff

    Stereotypes, archetypes and countertypes
We had to pick a film opening or a poster and look at the stereotypical representation of CLASS, AGE, GENDER, ETHNICITY or SEXUALITY

In this film poster it shows the main character is the girl closet to us. She is not the stereotypical popular girl which is strange because most main characters are blonde, popular and are rich. She has a good friendship with the boy in the middle and the other girl is jealous of her but doesn't like to show it. the main girl is the countertype as she challenges the archetype, which in this case is the other girl on the film poster, this is because she wants to make a point that guys go for any girl rather a girl with good looks and bad personality. Her clothing is pretty casual, she doesn't go over the top and try to stand out. She wear not a lot to no amount of make up which makes her a natural person inside and out. She is standing against the locker which could mean two things, the first thing it could mean is that she hasn't got a care in the world and she will do anything whether people like her or not, or the other thing it could mean is that in the end she knows that she wins which is why she has a slight smirk on her face. As you can see in this poster the other girl is our archetype, this means that the first time we see her we know who she is and what she is going to act like. We know this because of the media, people like her are repeated and this makes us believe that every popular girl is pretty, big busted and is a blonde bimbo. In this case the rich, popular stereotypical girl is a strawberry blonde and is one of the main characters. She makes the girl at the front look ugly and you get the impression that she thinks she rules the place. She knows she is pretty and she knows she can get any guy she wants but to us this makes her an ugly person because all she wants is to make people feel bad about themselves. Her clothing makes her stand out from the crowd this is because she is wearing heels and a nice top and pair of jeans. The top is strappy which could be classed as revealing so this would make her stand out even more.  She wear quite a lot of make up with this you could say that if she is fake on the outside she is fake on the inside. Although we know this is not always true but for her it is. Her body language is confident and the way she is standing makes her seem like she rules the school. She also stands with her hip poking out this could be done to make her figure look better and give her more curves. The boy in the middle of the girls is the main boy you know this because he is in the middle of the girls which shows that many girls are attracted to him and are always around him. He is a stereotypical boy, into sport, goes for popular, good looking girl. Although during the movie he gets closer to the main girl who he has lived next door to for many years and in the end he falls in love with her. This shows us that in the end the good girl always wins and the girl who wants and gets everything loses. His clothing is very cool and casual, this shows us that he doesn't try hard to make an impression on anyone he is attractive everyday of the week. He stands with his arms folded this could be to show empowerment, this means that if says something to someone they will do what he says because he is the team captain of the football team and they don't want to argue with him. He could also be standing like this because he knows that he can get all the girls without trying so he just stands there and lets them flaunt themselves a him. The font/text could be trying to tell us that the main boy and girl will end up together this is because both of them are wearing a similar colour to the title and none of the other characters in the film poster are. The main colour of the font is red this could mean that the story is going to have arguments and love in it as the colour red is associated with these words. The word 'duff' is quite bold this could be telling us that the story had a bold and strong message to get across to us. The title is also behind the main girl this could tell us that she is the most important character this is why she is in front of the title.
